Interview with a Legend
On this trip to lagos I had privilege of meeting and filming a vlog post for Busayo with Chief Mama Nike Davies Okundaye, a true cultural icon, at her gallery in Lekki, The gallery is a treasure trove of Nigerian art, filled with vibrant fabrics, intricate textiles, and stunning sculptures.
And on this trip I learned a valuable lesson about working and making my way around Lagos, bringing everything you need for the day when you leave in the morning is key. We planned to stop by our hotel to grab essential gear in afternoon before heading to the gallery, but time and traffic had other plans. I ended up with just my camera—no tripod, no microphones—just the essentials (thank goodness) and the spirit to do the best I could do , if you work with me, you know and find out I’m very creative in many many different situations with figuring out how to make things work.
Despite the challenges, the interview went ahead. I spent an hour and a half holding the camera steady-ish, improvising with my iPhone to record audio. Though it wasn't without hiccups—like the phone slipping into a chair cushion mid-interview—the experience was invaluable.
Chief Mama Nike’s warmth and wisdom made the day unforgettable. After the interview, she even prepared a vegetarian lunch for me, reflecting her thoughtful nature. While the footage and audio might not be perfect, she was so gracious to and that time with her was invaluable to me and I will always remember.
